Between 2018 and 2019, many of my friends had or adopted kids. It was a beautiful time and I wanted to celebrate it the best way I knew how: by making quilts. I knew I needed to produce each quilt quickly, so I chose to make them whole-cloth instead of pieced. Indigo was plentiful around my shared studio at the time and I loved the infinite design iterations I could achieve with clamped shibori techniques. But I was conscious of not wanting to make only blue baby quilts, a color so often associated with boys, especially infants and young children. I decided to lean in, choosing hot pink and white as the additional colors for all the quilts. Eventually, I started make extra quilts in advance of babies, hence “unnamed” which still has not been gifted.
