Let Your Flag Fly

A flag design activity for three fifth grade classes in Chicago Public Schools. The classes started by brainstorming the symbolic meanings of colors and shapes. With this shared visual and conceptual vocabulary, students were asked to design a flag that represented themselves. They roughly sketched four potential versions in pencil, and then chose a final one to render larger in color. After they shared and discussed their personal flags, each class was tasked with collaboratively designing a flag for their whole class. These final designs were manifested out of felt and hung in their classroom.
